This learning experience gave me a deeper understanding of WIC's integral role in promoting and supporting breastfeeding. WIC’s mission to improve the health of women, infants, and children is connected to breastfeeding because it is the most optimal source of nutrition for infants. I learned and gained valuable insight about the resources, education, and support system that WICs provide.
I resonated with the counseling module. It highlighted the importance of being an active listener and how actions such as eye contact can play a role in someone's experience. These skills resonated with my coaching background on an individual level and how effective communication can be a bridge to addressing fear or misconceptions. I found the science behind breastfeeding to be the most interesting part of the module. I also learned how breastfeeding frequently is important due to creating more demand. In addition, not only is it the best food source for infants but it can also benefit the mother’s health.
My key takeaways from this learning experience include reinforcing how education plays an essential role in filling the knowledge gap. From this module, I am reminded how much larger of an impact we can have on others as professionals in nutrition and dietetics. In the future, I plan to apply the principles of counseling strategies and problem-solving to help others achieve their goals. This module deepened my understanding of breastfeeding, and I feel more equipped to apply this knowledge in the future.
